Thieves marks the next installment in the wildly popular Sly franchise. Sly’s
two previous efforts (Sly
Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus and Sly 2: Band of Thieves) were best selling hits and Sly 3 looked to be the
most ambitious of the three. Let’s take a look and see what happens to Sly and
his band of thieves.
In Sly 3, we rejoin Sly Cooper, Bentley and Murray as they try to locate and
open the Cooper family safe, which is to hold treasures that his father’s gang
had accumulated over the years. The problem is that Sly, Bentley and Murray has
discovered is that the evil villain Dr. M has located the vault but has been
unable to open the safe. Only Sly can open the vault and he has every intention
to do so. To help him in his quest, he recruits new members for his gang.
In Sly 3, you get a broader collection of characters to choose from. Aside from
Sly, Bentley and Murray, you can now select from Carmelita Fox, Dimitri, Panda
King, Penelope the Dutch flying ace and the Australian shaman Guru. You will
need your new allies as you try to regain the safe from Dr. M.
Once you get to the game menu, you are given the option for choosing the most
current episode or you can choose to replay previous episodes. You can choose
the Gallery or Master Thief Challenges but you will need to unlock them before
gaining access. You can also check to find out the objectives you need to
accomplish to complete a job.
The gang has a set of basic moves basically using the left analog joystick for
movements and the right stick for camera view. Sly can perform a number of attacks
such as the overhead smash, juggle, dive spin as well as the cane swing and a
charge combo. You can also utilize the Cooper cane for attacks. The cane can be
used to whack your opponents or you can send a charge into the cane and using
it in a combo attack. The cane can also be used to help you climb, hang, grab
and swing. You can even use the cane to pickpocket your enemies. Now this is a
really fun move to execute.
Keep an eye on your thief meter because this is the indicator that tells you
that you’re in a position to sneak up on your enemies. When the color is
orange, that means the time is right to strike. If it turns to red, then you’ve
been spotted and your enemies are aware of you. The color will change as your
situation does. Other techniques that should come in handy is learning how to
crawl, climb and how to sneak along a wall. This could save your skin as
enemies are converging on you.
The game does offer an Abandon Job feature where you can either dump out of the
game wherever you are. The only problem is that you will have to start over
from the beginning of the episode if you were to try again.
You need to utilize your tools such as your magnifying glass to find hidden
codes, safe cracking skills and using disguises. The magnifying glass can be
used to take closer looks at artwork to find hidden codes. The safe cracking
feature is pretty cool in that you have to figure out the combo based on your
controller’s vibration. Simply rotate the analog stick just like you would turn
a combination lock. By feeling the vibration in the controller, you can
determine when you have unlocked the safe. You will need to use disguises to
get past certain points in the game. When you’re in disguise, you will need to
watch your screen closely so you can watch for the button combination that will
appear quickly on screen. If you can remember it, you will get by your enemy
with no problems but expect some chaos if your memory fails you. Master these
arts and you will be an effective, thieving raccoon.
