NFL Street 2 Unleashed for the Sony PSP provides a great way to fulfill your football needs until a new season begins in the Fall. While it is similar to
their Madden NFL series, NFL Street 2 Unleashed offers football fans a
new way of playing the game.
The game does resemble some of the more familiar basic elements that will remind you of Madden football but the game play is all NFL Street. Use the walls to escape tacklers, pitch the ball as you’re being tackled, deflect passes to teammates, strip ball carriers and more is all part of the action in NFL Street 2 Unleashed.
Are You Ready for Some Football?
Now this isn’t meant to be a watered down version of Madden. NFL Street 2 Unleashed is to provide gamers the opportunity to play your favorite team in a game of street football. No uniforms, helmets and especially those nagging penalties. I never played a Electronic Arts Street series game so I wasn’t sure what to expect.
After you create a profile, you are immediately given a main menu of items. The menus consists of Games Modes, Head to Head, Party Play, Modify Teams, Stats and Rewards, Options, User ids and the game’s credits. When you select Game Modes, you are then given another menu with the choices of Quick Game, Own the City, Street Events, NFL Challenges, NFL Gauntlet, Pickup Game and tutorials.
Under Game Modes, you can choose to play a quickie by selecting Quick Game. Just direct one on one or versus the computer. Own the City is where you can build your own player but to succeed you will need to enhance your player’s skills among a number of various games. Street Events provides you with a number of game variations. Some of the games you can get into is Crush the Carrier, Jump Ball Battle, Style Standoff, Street Slalom and the always popular 2 minute challenge. There are 9 total events you can choose from. NFL Challenge mode provides you with the opportunity to create your own team. You are given 150 days to get your team up to par so you need to bring your game to handle this. NFL Gauntlet is the take ‘em on mode. Here’s where you take on all NFL teams to unlock items. Pickup Game is where you draft your own team from a random selection of players. To better enhance your chances of winning (especially when playing in the most difficult mode), play through some of the given tutorials. You will be able to master the style moves that will help you rack up points and victories.
Head to Head mode allows you to play against a live opponent via wireless connection. You can either play via wireless connectivity or you can choose to play in Party Play mode where you can play multiplayer games using a single PSP. You are also given the opportunity to modify NFL teams, Own your City teams and NFL Challenge teams.
You are also given the option to spend your earned credits towards items. You can choose to purchase items from the Reebok Store, Barbershop, Department Store, Jewelry Store, Screen Printing and the Sporting Goods store. One of the cool items I found in Department Store was throwback jerseys. You can purchase old NFL jerseys such as the San Diego Chargers’ powder blues and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ old orange jerseys. NFL Street 2 Unleashed also keeps track of your stats so you can see just how well or how poorly you are doing on the gridiron (of course I had a undefeated record).
The Final Word
While I wasn’t sure what to expect from NFL Street 2 Unleashed since I never played one of these games, I was pleasantly surprised by the extreme nature of the game. You have most of the NFL players available for each individual team. The trick moves are sometimes tough to execute because the opponents are always swarming to the ball.
To increase your style points and score more frequently, you must master the ability to pitch the ball to your teammates and to take advantage of the walls. Just when it looks like you’ve cornered the opponent, they will take the high road and begin jumping off the walls to avoid being tackled. Learn these moves yourself and you will be able to defeat the computer even in the hardest mode. Try not to dive too much near the walls because the opponent can just use the wall to leap past you. Diving tackles are very useful when playing the middle of the field.
The music tracks available in the EA Pocket TRAX are an excellent collection and fit the theme of the game very well. You can choose your favorite tracks from the collection to play. Be aware that playing the music tracks will wear down the PSP’s battery quicker so if you’re going to be away from a power source for a while, you might want to invest into a extra battery source like the Nyko Charger Case to provide more portable power.
For those looking for a little football fix before the NFL regular season begins, pick up a copy of NFL Street 2 Unleashed for the PSP. The street football play and the various ways to execute a play make this game extremely entertaining. You can’t go wrong with NFL Street 2 Unleashed for the PSP.
