 Since the first day you brought your Mac home, you’ve probably heard
that you need to backup your important files. Day after day goes by and
just as long as your Mac boots up, you figure you have got nothing to
worry about. Then that one day where you need to access that project
for work and your Mac doesn’t boot and you wish you had made a backup
of your files.
If you used DobrySoft’s Backuper software, this potential problem could turn into a happy ending. Dobry Backuper is a Mac only utility program that you can set up to perform backups of your important files automatically either to disc media or to another hard drive.
To set up a backup, just select New Backup then choose Add Files from the Backup menu item. You are then prompted to select the files and folders you want backed up. Once you have your files and folders chosen, select Backup Location from the toolbar on the interface. You can choose to backup to either another hard drive or you can choose to do a backup to disc media such as a DVD.
Then select Options from the toolbar to choose the backup method (full, incremental, versioned), whether to use compression and the backup archive size limit. The next toolbar option Filters lets you determine what files you want excluded from the backup such as invisible files, Finder data, applications, aliases or even by pattern.
Then you need to set up your backup schedule. You can schedule the time for the backups as well as the timeframe of daily, weekly or monthly. Once you have made your selections, you are ready to make a backup of your files. Just select Build from the Backup menu and the program will begin to create the backup file. If you decided to backup to a disc, the program will begin to create your data backup file. Once your data is prepared for burning, the program will then prompt you to insert a blank disc so it can write the data.
The program threw me off in that it created an actual backup “file” instead of just making backup duplicates of the files I specified.
Overall, Dobry Backuper is a good solid program that can backup all of your important files to a variety of locations such as DVDs or even to another hard drive. You can restore an entire backup or you can select specific data that you want restored. I found the program’s ability to take your data files and prepare them for backing up onto disc media to be impressive.
I would have liked to have had a more intuitive user interface. For example, I didn’t understand why the add and remove file feature had to be accessed through the Backup menu item instead of just having a button placed on the program’s interface to provide quicker access. There appears to be enough room for that feature to be moved. Other than those interface issues, the program performs well and can help keep your important files safe from those hard drive failures. The program is available as a Universal Binary for Mac Intel systems.

- 3 MB of available disk space for application
- Some available extra disk space for temporary files if you plan to write backups on CDs or DVDs*
* The extra hard disk space equals to the size of one CD or DVD, plus about 30 - 300 MB for resource forks and auxiliary files. Basically, it should be accessible on the device where the '/tmp' folder is located.
