OtterBox for iPhone 3G Review Apple iPhone 3G is a wonderful all-around mobile device but it will be nothing more than an expensive paperweight if you don’t provide the best protection for it. There are many products to choose from but one that stood out was the OtterBox case for the iPhone 3G.

The thing I like about the OtterBox case is that it is not some flimsy shell of a case that would only offer the basic protection from the daily bumps. The case comes in a hard plastic shell with a swivel belt clip. To help keep the iPhone in place when it is installed in the belt clip, a rubber cover is provided which not only adds an additional layer of protection but it keeps the iPhone from sliding out.

To install the iPhone 3G, you first need to peel the rubber cover back from the case. Because the rubber cover and case is molded perfectly to allow access to all of the iPhone’s features, you need to be careful not to exert too much stress on either. The rubber cover fits snug against the case, so you can just fit your fingernail into an opening in the cover and just pry the cover off. Once the cover is pried back, you can slide the case out.

OtterBox for iPhone 3G Review With the case out, you will need to pry the case open with your fingernail by releasing some of the tabs around the edge of the case. Start by releasing the tab at the top of the case as this will make the process of opening the case a lot easier. After releasing the top tab, then work around the edge of the case by releasing the two tabs on each side. Once they are all released, just lift up of the backing and you will now have access.

Just slide your iPhone 3G into place and replace the backing into position. As you put the case back together, you should hear the tabs snap into place. The case should seal perfectly with the iPhone 3G in place. The case has open areas for the screen, buttons and ports.

The volume controls on the left side of the iPhone are accessible through the rubber cover. The silent ringer switch is available through an open flap. The sleep button is accessible at the top of the case through the rubber cover but it is a little difficult to activate. The headphone port is also available in the top through an open flap. The bottom of the case provides an opening for the speaker, microphone and the adapter. The thin clear plastic cover that protects the iPhone’s touch screen will not hinder the screen’s performance. I was able to type and access all functions with the touch screen as if I was working without the protection.

Overall, the OtterBox iPhone 3G case protector is a very good product. The only minor issue I had was with the sleep/wake button at the top of the case. Other than that, the case provides great protection and the touch screen works perfectly with the thin plastic cover protecting it. The belt clip is a great addition to the case and provides a very secure way to carry your iPhone 3G. After you slide it into place, you will feel safe that your iPhone will not become another paperweight. The OtterBox iPhone case for earns 4.5 out of 5 stars. Highly recommended.
